And I do mean endless.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister of England\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/files\/01-1\/01-1_003.pdf\">wrote to the Society of Indexers<\/a>\u00a0at the society&#8217;s founding back in\u00a0<em>freaking 1958<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I can scarcely conceal from you the fact that I am at present somewhat occupied with other matters, so that I cannot say all that comes into my mind and memory on the subject of indexing.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>One of the longest running features of the society&#8217;s publication,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/\">The Indexer<\/a>, is its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/files\/30-4\/30-4_213.pdf\">reviews of indices\u00a0<\/a>which are snippets culled from book reviews that pertain to the book&#8217;s index&#8230; They also regularly publish articles that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/files\/24-1\/24-1_006.pdf\">meditate on what it means to be an index<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/files\/24-1\/24-1_021.pdf\">defend indexing<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindexer.org\/files\/21-1\/21-1_033.pdf\">a look at the history of indexing societies<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These guys should definitely be invited to the<a href=\"http:\/\/re-design.dimiter.eu\/2012\/05\/24\/proposal-for-a-world-congress-on-referencing-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\"> World Congress on Referencing Styles<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This just needs to be re-posted [from Kottke]: [F]or the\u00a0Society of Indexers, book indices are a topic that holds endless fascination.
