{"id":257,"date":"2012-01-28T16:39:46","date_gmt":"2012-01-28T16:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rulesofreason.wordpress.com\/?p=257"},"modified":"2012-01-28T16:39:46","modified_gmt":"2012-01-28T16:39:46","slug":"climate-science-wars-the-lysenko-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-design.dimiter.eu\/?p=257","title":{"rendered":"Climate science wars: The Lysenko move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has published a <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970204301404577171531838421366.html\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> entitled &#8216;No need to panic about global warming&#8217; which opines that &#8220;<em>There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to &#8220;decarbonize&#8221; the world&#8217;s economy<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Alarmism also offers an excuse for governments to raise taxes, taxpayer-funded subsidies for businesses that understand how to work the political system, and a lure for big donations to charitable foundations promising to save the planet.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The letter is signed by 2 <a href=\"http:\/\/roygrubb.tumblr.com\/post\/16581690077\/the-16-concerned-scientists-who-they-are\" target=\"_blank\">meteorologists<\/a> and 14 other scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/328\/5979\/689.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> signed by 255 scientists making the case for human-induced global warming and published in Science in 2010. This letter <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2012\/01\/two_incontrovertible_things_an.php?utm_source=combinedfeed&amp;utm_medium=rss\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly<\/a> has been submitted to, but rejected by the WSJ. <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2012\/01\/28\/wsjs-partisan-approach-to-cl.html\" target=\"_blank\">Boing Boing<\/a> claims that it has also been drafted <em>in response<\/em>\u00a0to the WSJ piece but this is obviously wrong since the Science letter has been around since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The 16 scientists who <em>got<\/em> their letter published by the WSJ accuse the &#8220;international warming establishment &#8221; of pushing science into &#8216;the frightening period when Trofim <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trofim_Lysenko\" target=\"_blank\">Lysenko<\/a> hijacked biology in the Soviet Union&#8217;. Wow!<\/p>\n<p>This rhetorical trick is so incredibly audacious that it deserves to be immortalized as the &#8220;Lysenko move&#8221; and included into the standard weaponry for academic spats, next to\u00a0<em>reductio ad absurdum\u00a0<\/em>and <em>skeletons in the closet<\/em>.
