British medical scientists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/british-science-needs-integrity-overhaul-1.9803\" target=\"_blank\">call for stronger action<\/a> against academic fraud. \u00a0&#8220;<em>Dishonesty is common and institutionalized in medicine and medical research<\/em>&#8220;, said one of the participants in the conference. Importantly, the scientists want to classify the <strong>non-publication of negative results<\/strong> as a serious misconduct, next to plagiarism and data fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>In the US,\u00a0the Office of Research Integrity has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/us-authorities-crack-down-on-plagiarism-1.9776\" target=\"_blank\">censured \u00a0for misconduct<\/a> the director (and co-author) of a researcher who committed plagiarism. <strong>Failure to act<\/strong> on suspected fraud is rightly considered an offense in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>In China, the president of Zhejiang University is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/research-ethics-zero-tolerance-1.9756\" target=\"_blank\">leading a zero-tolerance policy<\/a> against misconduct. The <strong>crackdown<\/strong> was partly motivated \u00a0by the discovery of one Chinese journal editor that &#8216;<em>31% of the 2,233 submissions over that time to her publication, the Journal of Zhejiang University \u2014 Science, contained unoriginal material<\/em>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news is that some of the research arguing for the <strong>health benefits of red wine<\/strong> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/blogs\/shortsharpscience\/2012\/01\/red-wine-researcher-accused-of.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&amp;nsref=online-news\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a> to be completely bogus.
